Ships, cannons and naval combat

Protect your ship's 100 hit points, return fire with correctly aimed Battle Cannons and repair damage using boards.

Ship hit points and cannon limit

Ships have a maximum of 100 hit points, shown in a bar above the ship. A ship can carry up to two Battle Cannons. Installing and firing a cannon requires 100.0 base Captainship.

Crafting cannons and ammunition

Keep the materials in your normal backpack. Crafting and operating skills are separate: Blacksmithing makes the cannon, while Captainship is checked when installing and firing it.

Install and fire a cannon

  1. Select one of the four cannon positions on the ship image in the captain’s ship-management menu, then target a Battle Cannon Deed in your backpack. The barrel automatically faces out to sea from that side. Placement requires 100.0 Captainship; a ship can carry at most two cannons.
  2. Make sure the cannon faces the ship you want to attack. The target ship must be within 6 tiles.
  3. Double-click the cannon and target the other ship's captain/tillerman. A valid shot fires after 1 second, with a firing sound, muzzle effect and travelling cannonball.
  4. Each shot consumes one Cannon Ball and deals 20–30 damage. The same cannon can fire once every 3 seconds. Range and direction must remain valid during the shot. The player who installed a cannon can single-click it to see the Cannon Balls in their backpack; zero is shown in red. You can walk through installed ship cannons.

Removing cannons

Installed Battle Cannons are listed in the ship-management menu and can be removed there. The ship cannot be converted back into a deed while cannons remain installed. The other cargo, deck and active-trade requirements still apply.

Repairing with boards

  1. Put Boards in your normal backpack, double-click the Ship Repair Tool and target your ship's captain/tillerman.
  2. Stay still while repairing. One Board restores one hit point; up to two Boards are consumed each second to restore up to 2 hit points. The ship cannot exceed 100 hit points.
  3. Your character performs a punching animation while repairing, and the restored amount appears above the captain. Moving stops the repair. If only one hit point is missing, only one Board is used.

Sinking and floating loot

A ship sinks when its hit points reach zero. Hold contents and any trade cargo appear in a floating wreck chest. Opening it requires more than 70.0 Lockpicking and a Lockpick, and you must be within two tiles. Double-click the Lockpick and target the chest. The wreck chest is automatically removed, along with any items left inside, 5 minutes after it surfaces. Unlocking it or taking items does not reset this timer.

  • Players still aboard drown. Blue players are sent to Britain, and PK players to Buccaneer's Den.
  • Wreck cargo is not secure bank storage: other players who meet the lock requirement may loot it.

Return with Mariner's Compass

Shipwrights sell Mariner's Compass for 2,500 gp, with a stock of 10. If you have a deployed ship, double-click the compass to return to it after the Kal Ort Por casting delay. This journey costs no reagents or mana. If the ship has sunk or been removed, the compass will not send you to its former position.

Cast a fishing net from your ship

  1. Craft a Fishing Net in Tailoring → Misc with 90.0 Tailoring, 3 Cloth and 1 Rope. Unused nets stack in your backpack.
  2. Double-click a net in your backpack while aboard a ship. It is cast into nearby suitable water without selecting a target. Wait 2 seconds after an accepted cast before throwing another net; choosing another stack does not bypass the delay. Up to six nets can work on a ship at once.
  3. A net works for 10 seconds, catching 1–3 fish at seconds 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10. Its five catches send a total of 5–15 fish to the ship hold. Fish of the same type and properties join an existing stack in the hold. The net shows the latest catch and amount overhead. A full hold prevents a new net from being consumed, and an active net cannot overfill it.
  4. Each accepted net cast has a 10% chance of a SoS Bottle. An account can receive at most six bottles within its last 50 casts; a bottle can drop on the first cast. This limit does not guarantee a minimum number of bottles.
  5. SoS Bottles can be stacked. Stacks of two or more use two closely placed bottle images, like potions. Double-click a SoS Bottle to consume just one bottle from the stack and receive one Treasure Map. The Treasure guide covers reading the map, digging and collecting the chest rewards.
