Taming, ownership and Animal Deed

Taming and riding requirements differ: first you must own the animal.

Mounts in the world

Fixed world spawns include Horse varieties. In addition, 24 mount types and four special companion dogs appear outside guard zones through separate six-hour random cycles. Each group has at most one wild animal at a time. Guard counts and rarity are listed on Random Mounts and Companion Dogs. Existing owned mounts, Animal Deeds and Animal Trainer sales remain available.

Taming and Animal Lore

Use Animal Taming and target a suitable animal. Both real skills have the same minimum: Horse and Llama 55.1; Desert and Forest Ostard 59.1; Mid Ostard and Ore Llama 75.1; the four special companion dogs 90.1; Windrunner and Eowmu 100.0. Fresian, Mustang, Shire, Unicorn, Nightmare, Silver Steed and Kirin still require 95.1. The eight mounts with rider bonuses require 100.0. Mounting your own animal does not recheck these two skill minima; ownership and access rules still apply.

Difficulty and success

The animal’s taming difficulty is not a success percentage. Ore Llama has 98.1 difficulty and Kirin 105.0; this value is separate from the minimum skills needed to attempt taming. Normal Animal Taming uses skill and difficulty in its success calculation. Taming Staff uses its separate 90% success rule when its usage requirements are met.

Taming with a Taming Staff

Animal Trainers sell the Taming Staff for 380 gp, with 10–15 in refreshed stock. Double-click the staff to equip it and open an animal target. Start within 4 tiles and remain within 5 tiles throughout the attempt. Six calming messages, 2 seconds apart, lead to a result after about 14 seconds. Players meeting the required base Taming and Animal Lore skills have a 90% success chance. Injured, fighting, summoned or already owned animals cannot be taken. Unequipping the staff, hiding, moving away or losing line of sight cancels the attempt. Spawned animals must remain within 4 tiles of their home. Releasing and taming the same animal again does not grant skill or quest progress.

Shrink and Carry

Buy an Animal Deed from an Animal Trainer / Tamer for 1,800 gp and target an eligible animal you own. The shrunken animal appears in your backpack with its own icon. Releasing or mounting it requires a safe, accessible position; the shrunken animal is a real inventory item.

Protect Timed Animals

Tamed animals not listed in the guide’s Mounts section are removed after 30 seconds; this also applies to previously owned animals. Transferring or shrinking them does not restart the timer. Regular owned horses named Horse have a separate 3-minute removal rule unless ridden or shrunk. Shire, Mustang and other special mounts are excluded from this Horse rule. The Horse timer appears and disappears with the name.
